Broker Overview

This 1979 Amel Mango, named ANNIE M, is a compelling offering for a serious cruising yachtsman. While a 1979 hull, this vessel has undergone an extensive, multi-decade refit, transforming it into a modern, highly capable bluewater ketch. The core value here is the legendary Amel Mango hull, renowned for its robust construction and seakindly motion, now paired with contemporary systems and structural enhancements. The current owners have systematically rebuilt and upgraded nearly every aspect, from reinforced bulkheads and renewed tankage to a complete ABYC-compliant rewire and modern Victron power management. This is not a superficial cosmetic refresh; it's a deep, structural, and mechanical overhaul aimed at long-range reliability. The protected center cockpit, ketch rig, and intelligently reconfigured two-cabin layout with a rebuilt galley and new heads make her genuinely ready for extended voyages. While the Perkins 4-236 HP engine is a proven workhorse, its single configuration should be noted for those accustomed to twin-engine redundancy. For a buyer seeking a proven offshore platform with the heavy lifting of a major refit already completed, ANNIE M represents a significant value proposition at $239,000, offering capabilities often found in much newer, higher-priced vessels.

Expert Review

The Amel Mango hull is a benchmark for offshore cruising, known for its overbuilt fiberglass construction, encapsulated keel, and exceptional seakeeping. This particular 1979 model, ANNIE M, has transcended its vintage through a meticulous, long-term refit. The structural reinforcements, updated systems, and modern interior appointments mean you're essentially getting a significantly younger boat in terms of functionality and reliability, built on an incredibly solid foundation. When surveying, focus on the quality and documentation of the refit work—specifically the electrical, plumbing, and rigging installations. Ensure all systems are properly commissioned and documented. The Perkins 4-236 is a reliable, albeit older, engine; its maintenance history and current condition are paramount. Value for money is excellent here, as replicating this level of refit on a similar hull would far exceed the asking price. Comparables might include similarly refitted Hallberg-Rassys or older Oyster models, but few will offer this specific combination of Amel's unique design philosophy and comprehensive modernization at this price point.

Full Listing Description

ANNIE M is a custom-built Amel 52 ketch, based on the legendary Amel Mango hull and comprehensively transformed over the past twenty years into a modern, highly capable bluewater passagemaker. Acquired by her current owners with the intention of serious offshore cruising, the yacht has been thoughtfully and systematically rebuilt—structurally, mechanically, and cosmetically—to meet contemporary expectations for safety, comfort, and long-range reliability. Beginning with her robust hull, most bulkheads have been reinforced with Sapele overlay and freshly tabbed to the hull in the style of the newer Amel yachts. Tankage, electrical systems, rigging, and onboard systems have been renewed or upgraded throughout, reflecting an uncompromising approach to offshore preparation.

Her proven ketch rig, protected center cockpit, and well-balanced hull form deliver the seakindly motion, redundancy, and heavy-weather confidence for which Amel yachts are renowned. Below decks, ANNIE M offers a warm, secure, and intelligently reconfigured two-cabin layout, with a beautiful custom-built salon table, fully rebuilt galley with Corian countertops and modern refrigeration, new heads and plumbing, upgraded climate control, and carefully executed joinery throughout. Systems accessibility, redundancy, and serviceability remain central to her design, underscored by a complete ABYC-compliant rewire, modern Victron power management, upgraded navigation electronics, new rigging and sails, and numerous safety enhancements.

The result is a yacht that retains the core virtues that made Henri Amel’s designs legendary—strength, offshore competence, and conservative engineering—while benefiting from decades of knowledgeable ownership and continuous investment. A competitor in the 2022 Vic-Maui Yacht Race, ANNIE M is a proven ocean-going design, extensively refit and fully prepared for extended passagemaking and comfortable cruising.
