Broker Overview

This 1938 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat, 'Choptank', represents a unique opportunity for a discerning buyer. At 65 feet, she is a vessel with significant historical provenance, having been designed and built by O.W. Payne. What sets 'Choptank' apart is the extensive, professional rebuild undertaken from 2011 to recently, with maintenance overseen by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's shipwrights. This was not a cosmetic refresh; it included substantial re-planking, new running gear, a modern Cummins 410 HP main engine, a new Onan 21.5 kW generator, and a complete overhaul of wiring, plumbing, seacocks, and systems. A new pilothouse has also been constructed. The vessel is currently at a stage where the new owner has the flexibility to complete her as either a commercial vessel with a Certificate of Inspection (COI) or as a private pleasure yacht. The cargo holds have been converted into unfinished staterooms, allowing for a custom interior fit-out. This provides a rare chance to acquire a historically significant hull with the core structural and mechanical work largely addressed, ready for personalization. The asking price of $300,000 reflects the substantial investment already made in her restoration, offering a compelling value proposition for a project of this scale and heritage.

Expert Review

The 'Choptank' is not a typical brokerage offering; it's a significant restoration project with a strong foundation. The build quality, originally from O.W. Payne, is robust, and the recent rebuild has addressed critical structural and mechanical components. The installation of a Cummins QSL9 engine and Onan generator provides modern reliability, a crucial factor for any vessel, especially one of this vintage. Sea-keeping for these buyboats is generally excellent, designed for the working waters of the Chesapeake. The value for money here lies in the extensive work already completed; a comparable ground-up restoration would easily exceed the asking price. For a survey, focus on the quality of the recent planking, ensure all new systems (electrical, plumbing) are documented and to current ABYC standards where applicable, and thoroughly inspect the remaining hull structure not part of the recent rebuild. This is a project boat, but one where the heavy lifting has been done. Alternatives would be other historic working vessels, but few will offer this level of recent mechanical and structural investment.

Full Listing Description

Choptank is for sale! She is a 1938 65' O.W. Payne designed and built Chesapeake Bay Buyboat. Choptank underwent a major rebuild from 2011 to recent and has been maintained since by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's experienced and knowledgeable local shipwrights. The museum stopped the rebuild at the point where she can be completed as a commercial vessel with a COI or as a pleasure vessel. You could hire the museum to complete the project or complete her elsewhere or by yourself to your final design and specs.

The rebuild included extensive re-planking, new running gear, new Cummins 410 HP main engine, new Onan 21.5 kW generator, all new wiring, plumbing, seacocks and systems and a new pilothouse constructed. Her cargo holds were converted into unfinished staterooms, so that the final fit out can be chosen by her new owner.

This is one of those rare once in a lifetime opportunities to own a historic and unique vessel!
