Broker Overview

This 1998 Sea Ray 630 Super Sun Sport, currently located in Algonac, Michigan, represents a significant opportunity for a buyer seeking a large express cruiser with proven power and a spacious layout. At 63 feet, this vessel offers substantial volume for its class, making it well-suited for extended cruising or entertaining. The twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel engines are a key selling point; these are robust, commercially rated powerplants known for their reliability and longevity, providing excellent performance for a boat of this size. While the listing indicates two heads, it specifies one master stateroom and a guest cabin, which is a practical configuration for private ownership. The Super Sun Sport lineage is known for its blend of performance and luxury, and this 630 is no exception, featuring a comfortable interior and an expansive cockpit. Buyers should understand that a vessel of this vintage and size will require diligent maintenance, and while the asking price of $249,900 reflects its age, it also presents a compelling value proposition for a 63-foot yacht with Caterpillar power. This is a lot of boat for the money, but a thorough survey will be critical to assess the condition of systems and structure.

Expert Review

The Sea Ray 630 Super Sun Sport, particularly with the Caterpillar 3412 power, is a well-regarded express cruiser. Build quality for Sea Ray in this era was generally solid, offering a good balance of structural integrity and interior finish. The deep-vee hull design provides a comfortable ride in a chop, making it suitable for larger bodies of water like the Great Lakes or coastal cruising. While the asking price is attractive for a boat of this size and engine package, potential buyers must budget for a comprehensive pre-purchase survey. Pay close attention to the condition of the engine room, specifically checking for signs of deferred maintenance on the Caterpillars, generator, and associated systems. Electrical systems, air conditioning, and navigation electronics will also be key areas to inspect given the yacht's age. Comparable alternatives might include larger express cruisers from brands like Hatteras or Viking of a similar vintage, though often at a higher price point for similar power. This 630 offers significant utility and performance for its current market value.

POWERBOAT GUIDE DESCRIPTION: (Please note that this boat is equipped with shaft drives and a deep-vee hull without prop pockets) The 630 Super Sun Sport and her sistership, the 630 Sundancer set American sport yacht standards in their day for size and luxury. While they look alike on the outside, the Sundancer uses Arneson surface drives to reduce draft and drag—an installation that results in a much higher top speed. Both are built on fully cored, deep-V hulls with moderate beam (the Sun Sport has prop pockets) and an integrated transom. Sharing similar floor-plans, the massive salon is dominated by sculptured overhead panels and a long contoured leather sofa. The master stateroom is all the way forward, and a day head is in the salon. Note the crew quarters in the Sun Sport hidden beneath the transom and accessed via the cockpit sun pad. Additional features include a reverse arch, two transom doors, circular lounge seating in the cockpit, and a well-arranged engine room with push-button access. An excellent performer with 1,075hp 12V92 diesels, the Sun Sport will cruise at 30 knots (32–33 knots top). The Sundancer model, available during 1995–99, can reach a top speed of nearly 45 knots with 1,300hp surface-drive Cats—super-impressive performance for a 63-foot yacht.
