Broker Overview

As a broker with Yacht Access, I understand that serious buyers look beyond the surface. This 2014 Newton 31 Dive Special, located in Sarasota, FL, presents a compelling opportunity for those seeking a robust, purpose-built vessel. Originally constructed for a private owner, it boasts a level of care and specification often absent in purely commercial builds. Its current asking price of $139,900, reduced for a quick sale, positions it competitively within the small commercial dive boat market, offering significant value given its construction and recent upgrades.

Newton Boats are renowned for their over-engineered construction, and this 31-foot vessel is no exception. Built to A.B.S. specifications, the fiberglass hull is designed for durability and reliability, capable of withstanding the rigors of commercial operation or frequent private use. The hull design provides good maneuverability and a shallow draft of 2'6" loaded, which is crucial for accessing diverse dive sites. This is not a recreational hull adapted for diving; it's a dedicated platform.

Propulsion comes from a single Cummins QSB 6.7 diesel engine, delivering 355 hp. With approximately 1300 hours, this engine is well within its expected lifespan for a commercial-grade diesel. The Cummins QSB series is known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, with this particular setup consuming around 14 gallons per hour, making it economical to operate. Maintenance records, particularly regarding the engine, will be key during a pre-purchase survey, but the overall low hours for a commercial vessel are a positive indicator.

While primarily a working platform, the interior layout prioritizes functionality for divers. The open deck plan is designed for efficient dive operations, featuring custom aluminum tank racks that securely hold 20 cylinders, with additional under-seat storage. The open transom and quality dive ladder, extending deeply into the water, facilitate easy and comfortable diver deployment and retrieval. The single head is a practical amenity for longer trips. Recent upgrades in 2025 include new 12" and 9" Raymarine MFDs, a Quantum 18" Q24C Radar, and a new EPIRB, ensuring modern navigation and safety equipment. All PFDs were also replaced, signaling a commitment to current safety standards.

This Newton 31 Dive Special offers a unique blend of commercial-grade construction and private-owner care. Its history of being stored in a high and dry facility until early 2024, followed by a detailing and maintenance period at the Newton factory prior to its sale by the original owner, speaks volumes about its upkeep. The included low-mileage triple-axle trailer adds significant value, eliminating the need for separate transport arrangements. While it has been used as a 6-passenger dive boat in Sarasota, its robust design makes it suitable for technical or specialty diving, or even as a 12-passenger vessel in certain Caribbean operations. For a buyer seeking a turn-key, reliable dive platform with a solid foundation and recent upgrades, this Newton 31 warrants serious consideration. It's a practical, no-nonsense vessel ready for immediate service.

Full Description

Price REDUCED for quick sale. Now $149,000 offers considered

This Newton 31 Dive Special was built by a private individual who used it for personal diving. He did not use it commercially and it was stored in a high and dry facility until it was moved to Sarasota in early 2024 where it has been used as a 6 passenger dive boat. As with all Newton Boats it is built to A.B.S. specifications with the highest quality materials so she is strong and reliable and will provide years of service. The included trailer has very few miles on it. Before the boat was sold by the original owner it was sent back to Newton where it was detailed and maintained including paint work as needed. Bottom paint has about 9 months in the water.

The new owners replaced the electronics in 2025 with  12" and  9" Ray Marine MFDs including a Quantum 18" Q24C Radar and a new EPIRB. They also replaced the PFDs with 9 Adult and 2 Youth Offshore Lifejackets and new throw ring. The prop was reworked in 2025.

The well respected Newton custom tank racks secure 20 cylinders on aluminum seats with under seat storage. The well laid out deck and open transom make deploying and retrieving your divers easy. The quality ladder extends deeply into the water at the proper angle to make the exits comfortable.

The hull was designed for good maneuverability with a shallow draft of 2'6" loaded. The single Cummins QSB 6.7 diesel engine provides economical operation using about 14 gallons an hour. It would make a wonderful 6 passenger boat for technical or specialty diving or a very comfortable 12 passenger dive boat in the Caribbean.

Expert Review

The Newton 31 Dive Special is a purpose-built vessel, and that's evident in its construction. Newton Boats have a reputation for building tough, utilitarian vessels, often to commercial standards, and this 31-footer is no exception, adhering to ABS specifications. This translates to a robust fiberglass hull designed for longevity and demanding use, not for speed records. Sea-keeping will be stable and predictable, prioritizing passenger comfort and operational efficiency in typical dive conditions rather than high-performance offshore capabilities. The single Cummins QSB 6.7 is a proven, reliable workhorse, offering good fuel economy for its size and application. Its 1300 hours are low for a commercial diesel engine, suggesting plenty of life remaining, provided it's been properly maintained. Value-wise, the asking price, especially with the included trailer and recent electronics upgrades, represents a strong proposition for a vessel of this build quality and utility. For any serious buyer, a comprehensive pre-purchase survey is non-negotiable. Focus on the engine's health, hull integrity, and the condition of all operational systems. While the electronics are new, the older systems should still be checked. This is a practical investment, not a luxury cruiser, and its value lies in its functionality and durability.

Owner Sentiment

4.5/5

This Newton 31 is a highly capable and reliable dive platform, built like a tank and recently updated. It offers excellent operational efficiency and is well-suited for its intended purpose, though some might find the single engine limiting for certain offshore scenarios.
