Broker Overview
As a broker at Yacht Access, I've seen countless commercial vessels, and this 1978 Marine Management passenger boat presents a clear opportunity for the right operator. Located in Mount Desert, ME, this is a purpose-built, heavily constructed vessel designed for continuous commercial service, evidenced by its USCG certification for 42 passengers and 2 crew. It has a proven history as both a dive boat and passenger ferry, indicating its versatility and robust design.
From a construction standpoint, the Marine Management hull is solid fiberglass, semi-displacement, and built to last. This is not a recreational hull adapted for commercial use; it's a workhorse. The skeg rudder design offers excellent protection and maneuverability, critical for commercial operations in varied conditions. While the listing notes it requires some cosmetic work and repairs, the fundamental structure is sound, which is paramount for a vessel of this age and type. The fact that it's currently on jack stands for winter storage allows for thorough inspection and preparatory work.
Power comes from twin Detroit 8V71 Natural engines, a well-regarded and incredibly durable powerplant in the commercial marine sector. With 13,100 hours, these engines have seen significant use, but Detroits are known for their longevity if properly maintained. The total 460 hp provides reliable propulsion for its intended use. Crucially, the owner is including two running 'take out' spare engines, which is a significant value add, offering immediate redundancy or parts for future maintenance. This demonstrates a pragmatic approach to commercial operation, minimizing downtime.
Interior layout is functional, featuring one head, and designed for passenger transport rather than luxury. The recent upgrades, particularly in 2016 and 2017, address critical areas: fuel tanks, plumbing, fire suppression (fire pump, FireBuoy, extinguishers, EPIRB), navigation electronics (GPS plotter, VHF radios), and safety gear (life floats, life ring). Mechanical upgrades include transmission rebuilds, heat exchanger service, hydraulic pump replacements, and shaft/rudder work. These are not minor cosmetic fixes but substantial investments into the vessel's operational integrity and safety compliance. The recovered passenger benches and new bicycle transport rack also show attention to passenger comfort and utility.
This Marine Management vessel is not a turnkey luxury yacht; it's a working boat with a history and a future. Its value proposition lies in its proven commercial certification, robust construction, and the significant recent investments in its operational systems. The asking price of $105,000 for a USCG-certified 42-passenger vessel with spare engines represents a competitive entry point into the commercial passenger market. A buyer should consider this vessel if they are looking for a reliable, commercially compliant platform for dive charters, ferry service, or similar passenger transport operations in Mount Desert, ME, or beyond, and are prepared to address the remaining cosmetic and minor repair items to bring it to their desired standard.

Full Description
This Marine Management boat is a Heavily Built passenger vessel with USCG Certification for 42 passengers and 2 crew. It has spent it's lifetime working as a dive boat and passenger ferry. The hull is solid fiberglass semi displacement with a skeg rudder and very sound. It needs some cosmetic work and a few repairs to be ready for it's next job. The boat is currently on jack stands in the yard for the winter.
The current owner purchased the boat to run water taxi service in Puerto Rico. He purchased two running task out engines as spares to ship down with the boat. But before the boat left he found an existing business at a bargain and purchased it. The spare engines are included in the purchase.

Expert Review
This 1978 Marine Management is a classic example of a purpose-built commercial vessel. The build quality is inherently robust; a solid fiberglass hull from this era means substantial laminate thickness, designed for continuous duty and abuse. It's not a performance hull, but a stable, semi-displacement platform built for carrying capacity and sea-kindliness in coastal waters. The Detroit 8V71 'Natural' engines are legendary for their durability and straightforward maintenance, though their fuel consumption and noise levels are higher than modern diesels. The inclusion of two spare running engines is a major asset, providing immediate operational security.
Value-wise, a USCG-certified vessel for 42 passengers at $105,000 is compelling, especially with the recent upgrades. However, a comprehensive survey is non-negotiable. Focus on the structural integrity, particularly around any areas of previous repair or modification. Engine surveys should include oil analysis and compression checks, even with the spares. Electrical systems, although upgraded in parts, need a thorough inspection, as do all safety systems and certifications. Understand that while many items were addressed, a vessel of this age will always require ongoing maintenance and investment. This is a practical acquisition for a commercial operator who understands the commitment involved.
Owner Sentiment
This vessel is a true workhorse, built for reliability and commercial service. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done consistently. The spare engines are a huge bonus for peace of mind.
