Broker Overview

This 2004 Ebony Custom Sportfish 65 Convertible represents a serious opportunity for the discerning angler or cruiser seeking a robust, well-equipped platform. Built with a cored fiberglass hull, this vessel offers a solid foundation for offshore performance. The twin MTU 12VDDC2000M91 engines provide ample power, making her a capable contender for serious fishing or comfortable long-range cruising. A significant advantage is the recent investment in key systems: a new Kabota generator in 2023 and a new Cummins generator in 2022, ensuring reliable power. Furthermore, the topside paint was refreshed in 2023, and a new Garmin electronics package was installed, bringing her navigation and fish-finding capabilities up to modern standards. Her three-cabin, three-head layout offers comfortable accommodations for owners and guests, while the dedicated aft cockpit is clearly designed for serious fishing. The presence of bow thrusters, stabilizers, and a SeaKeeper system significantly enhances comfort and maneuverability, distinguishing her from many vessels in this class. While a custom build, the recent upgrades and thoughtful layout present a compelling package for a buyer looking for a turn-key option with proven offshore pedigree.

Expert Review

The Ebony 65 Convertible, as a custom build, often showcases a higher degree of owner input and robust construction. The cored fiberglass hull provides a good balance of strength and weight. With the MTU 12VDDC2000M91 engines, expect strong performance and a solid ride in varying sea conditions, typical of a well-designed convertible. The recent installation of a SeaKeeper, alongside existing stabilizers, is a significant enhancement for comfort at anchor and underway, making this a more attractive option for extended trips. The new Garmin electronics package and fresh topside paint address common areas of concern in a vessel of this vintage, reducing immediate capital outlay for a new owner. During a survey, focus on the condition of the MTU engines, particularly given their power output, and ensure all recent upgrades, especially the generators and electronics, were installed professionally. Check for any signs of water intrusion around deck hardware and windows, common on custom builds if not maintained. Comparables might include Hatteras or Viking convertibles of similar size, though this Ebony offers a unique custom build advantage with modern stabilization and electronics.
