Her narrow beam, long waterline, and powerful sailplan will keep her moving quickly in light and strong winds. Timeless design details like the walk-through transom, scoop stern, easy companionway, large spade rudder, and bulbed keel keep demand for this boat high. Excellent storage space, a large cockpit, and adequate tankage will allow for months of cruising between port.
Interior Accommodations
At the forward end of the cockpit, easy transition is provided by the companionway to the interior accommodation space. A white fiberglass sliding hatch stows forward beneath a sprayhood. There are two tapered acrylic washboards. Four curved steps topped with teak-colored Treadmaster non-skid comprise descend to the cabin sole. The Saga 35 interior layout is nicely proportioned for a cruising couple with occasional visitors. With a single head and large quarterberth, the interior feels open, light, and spacious. Starting forward is forward stateroom. The head/shower is to starboard just forward of the main bulkhead. The salon is perfectly centered ahead of an “U”-shaped galley to port and forward facing nav station to starboard. The quarterberth is open to starboard and beneath the cockpit. Headroom measures 6’ 4” through most of the interior.
Interior design and build details are well conceived and executed. The overhead is textured white fiberglass with recessed lights and access panels where needed. Ample light and ventilation is provided from opening overhead hatches, opening and fixed cabinside ports, and cowl vents. Varnished American Cherry, solid and plywood, are used for cabinets and furniture. The teak and holly plywood cabin sole is screwed down. Centerline bilge access panels are fitted with locking handles. Cherry handrails on the overhead and deck/cabin edge allow safe at-sea passage around the interior. Reading lights and cabin sole courtesy lights are well-situated. Overhead dome and spot lights are wall-switched. Countertops and open shelves are fitted with fiddles. 120V outlets are found in each space where one would expect them. The tasteful blue upholstery on mattresses and cushions are in good condition. Settee cushions are secured in place with Velcro and sculpted for maximum comfort. Cabinet doors positively close with finger-hole accessed elbow catches. Insect screens are available for all opening hatches and ports.
A forward stateroom is at the bow and entered through a locking privacy door. The “V” berth measures 6’ 3” long by 5’ 8” aft by 20” forward. An access hatch to the divided anchor locker is located in the forward bulkhead. Two large top opening storage bins are below the “V” berth. White formica lines the hull sides outboard of the bunk. Five hinged-door storage cabinets are above the bunk, below the deck edge. Three reading lights are properly positions for reading in bed - head forward or aft as preferred. An 18” dressing seat with storage bin beneath the cushion is aft of the berth to port. A 28” long cedar-lined hanging locker is aft to port. A large overhead hatch, cabin side opening port, and 110V outlet complete this cabin.
Access to the head/shower is either ensuite from the forward head or from the salon. Both of these doors are cherry outside with a white laminate finish inside the head. The head compartment is constructed of molded white fiberglass for water resistance and ease of cleaning and maintenance. An integral vanity sink is forward and fitted with a Scandvik hot/cold faucet with pull-out shower nozzle and hose. A cherry-trimmed mirror is on the forward bulkhead. A molded fiberglass shower pan with non-skid and gutters drains shower water to a sump box and overboard pump. Smoked-acrylic sliders are fitted to an outboard storage cabinet beneath the deck edge. The head is outboard/aft. Two overhead spot lights, a 120V outlet, cowl vent, and opening port complete this space.
The salon is perfectly symmetric and centrally located. A 44” x 41” centerline drop leaf table is beautifully constructed. Port and starboard settees measure 6’ 6” long and sculpted/wrapping cushions make for very comfortable seating. Water tanks are beneath both settee aft with top opening bin storage forward. Narrow storage bins are outboard of the settee backs. Hinged door storage cabinets aft of a narrow open shelf are outboard and above the settees on each side. Stereo speakers are mounted on the main bulkhead. Four reading lights, overhead spotlights, 120v outlets, Hella cabin fan, and grab rails complete this living space.
The navigation station is to starboard of the companionway and has a 24” by 24” chart table with 3” deep hinged-top chart drawer beneath it. A bench seat with upholstered cushion has bin storage beneath it. Hinged storage cabinets are beneath the chart table and outboard of the seat. The GPS, VHF, and battery monitor are mounted outboard of the bench. The electrical switch/breaker panel are outboard of the chart table. A bank of four drawers sits below an open counter and a tall cedar lined hanging locker is outboard.
The “U”-shaped galley is to port and nicely situated between the cockpit/companionway and salon dining area. The galley counter is white with black flecked Corian with an integral 2” high fiddle. Double underhung stainless-steel sinks are forward and well inboard for draining while heeled. These sinks measure 12” by 12” by 8” deep and 12” by 9” by 8” deep and are fitted with a single lever faucet with pull out spray nozzle. A trash bin/beneath is attached to the hinge out door inboard and beneath the sink. Ample storage for cleaning gear and supplies is beneath the sink. A top opening storage bin beneath the counter is outboard of the sink. Beneath the deck edge and beneath the cockpit, three dish/pantry cabinets are closed with smoked acrylic sliders. A gimballed three burner Force Ten stove/oven is fitted with a stainless-steel crash bar and belt for cooking on port tack offshore. Just aft of the stove is a bank of three drawers and one front opening bin. The top opening 7.5 cubic foot fridge/freezer is all the way aft beneath the Corian counter. This large, refrigerated space is fitted with a sliding acrylic shelf and dome light. Overhead spot lights, a task light over the stove, and two 120 volt outlets complete this galley.
The quarterberth is to starboard, aft of the nav station. Double cushions lift-up and easily remove for access to batteries, engine transmission and other systems below. A removable panel in the aft bulkhead provides access to the steering system, water heater, and water pressure pump. The bunk measures 6’ 6” long by 5’ wide forward and 4’ wide aft. Two reading lights and a cabin fan complete this sleeping space.
Electronics and Navigation
Electrical Systems
Mechanical Systems
The mechanical and plumbing systems on the Saga 35 are robust and ABYC compliant. All components are easily accessed and in apparent good working order. The Yanmar engine is housed in an easily opened box with sound insulation to provide three side access.
Deck and Hull
Sails and Rigging
The Saga 35 is a performance cruiser with a powerful yet manageable sail plan. All control lines are led aft to the cockpit and a self-tacking jib means tacking with just a turn of the helm; no sail hanlding. A Solent-style headsail arrangement finds a larger overlapping genoa just forward of the self-tacking jib. Hardware is by Harken and sized to reduce loads and effort by crew.
