Racing Sailboat

Construction

The hull consists of Kevlar and ‘S-Glass’ composite skins ove Corecell ‘san’ foam cores whose density is varied to suit local loadings. The deck is a similar laminate of fiberglass skins over corecell foam with high compression core and additional laminate in way of all deck hardware. Gougeon epoxy resins are used throughout. Both hull and deck are locally reinforced with unidirectional Kevlar to minimize the longitudinal deflections resulting from the headstay, running backstay and mast compression loadings. Methodical weight control is a high priority, and all moldings and components were carefully weighed before assembly.

Broker's Notes

The Taylor 43 is a fully optimized racing sloop built at a cost exceeding USD$700,000 in 1998 and raced as “Sheerness” in the Rhode Island and east coast area. She is offered as a turnkey PHRF or IMS racer with a rating 0 to 9 under PHRF. She is easily managed by a round the buoy crew of 7-8. Her light displacement combined with powerful under body foils and well thought out sail handling systems offers all racers as opportunity to enjoy 1st to finish potential.

I have personally sailed the boat as the mainsail trimmer - its a great boat in all wind conditions, easy to shift gears up or down using an infinite amount of adjustments on the main & genoa track.

Designer's Notes

Targeted to rate 554 GPH, just above the “bubble” of current 39-43 footers, e.g Farr 40 OD (560), ILC 40’s (565), Rave (557.5), Tripp 41 (562), N/M 1200 (572) and Farr 39ML (564). This target rating would also be safely slower than the small end of the big class in high-level events that split their IMS fleet into two divisions. It is usually a huge advantage to be on the big, fast side of the class bread.

Optimized for both very light air on the one hand, and solid breeze with a big chop on the other, when compared to the medium air winner NUMBERS. This is achieved via fine-tuning the displacement vs. the effective sailing length, and as well as the sail area vs. displacement and wetted surface.

Fitted with a fully adjustable “racing rig”, as opposed to the swept-spreader “one-design” rigs. This new design will reliably control these “simple-rig” boats upwind, the performance profiles of these simple rig one-designs are often skewed drastically towards the downwind end of the spectrum, and this design will match them much more closely off the breeze than previous IMSA racers as well. Several significant refinements have been incorporated in the rig geometry and detailing based on recent wind and water tunnel research and on Admiral’s Cup and America’s Cup experiences.

Long effective sailing length for the rating, narrow beam, tank tested foils, and ample stability.
